Foreign tourist arrivals in Myanmar up 22.9 pct on year in Q2

Yangon [Myanmar], August 12: Myanmar welcomed 42,315 foreign tourists between April and June, up 22.9 percent year-on-year, according to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism.
The Southeast Asian country resumed the operations of international commercial flights in April, and the number of tourists visiting the country gradually increased, the ministry's figures showed.
China, India and Thailand were the biggest sources of tourist arrivals for Myanmar this year, according to the ministry.
Myanmar's Ministry of Hotels and Tourism was working to revive its pandemic-hit tourism industry, drawing a strategic roadmap for Myanmar tourism recovery (2021-2025) that includes 18 strategies and 93 actions, Union Minister for Hotels and Tourism Htay Aung has said.
"Myanmar's tourism industry, like other countries, was affected by the COVID-19 crisis, and is trying to recover as soon as possible," the union minister said.
Official data showed that more than 4.36 million tourists visited Myanmar in 2019 before the COVID-19 outbreak occurred in the country.
The number of tourists who visited Myanmar significantly dropped to 0.9 million in 2020 and 0.13 million in 2021 due to the virus, official figures showed.
As of Wednesday, Myanmar recorded a total of 614,276 COVID-19 infections, including 19,434 deaths and 593,049 recoveries, the health ministry's data showed.
