Romania's president nominates Dacian Ciolos as PM

Oct 12, 2021

Bucharest (Romania), October 12: Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Monday nominated Dacian Ciolos, the new chairman of the Save Romania Union (USR), as candidate for prime minister to form a new government.
"We are ready to take the responsibility of governance and start negotiations with the other parties," Ciolos, 52, wrote on his social media account.
Ciolos served as prime minister between November 2015 to January 2017. He stressed that "our goal is to take Romania out of the crisis, and for this we need a lot of responsibility from all the political forces."
Under the country's constitution, the prime minister-designate has ten days to form a government and win a vote of confidence in Parliament.
The coalition government led by Florin Citu, president of the National Liberal Party (PNL), collapsed last Tuesday after it lost a censure motion initiated by the main opposition Social Democratic Party (PSD) and supported by most other parties in Parliament.
The USR-PLUS party, which has changed its name to USR and elected a new chair in the meantime, had set as a precondition the removal of the prime minister for returning to the coalition.
