Rubbish piles up on Zagreb streets as municipal collectors strike

Jan 27, 2023

Budapest [Hungary], January 27:A wildcat strike by rubbish collectors is causing mountains of waste to pile up on the streets of the Croatian capital Zagreb.
For the fourth day in a row, the employees of the municipal cleaning service withdrew their labour as part of a demand for higher wages, Croatian media reported on Thursday. Exceptions have been made for waste disposal services for hospitals, kindergartens, schools and old people's homes.
An end to the work stoppage is not in sight. Negotiators from the cleaners' union and the municipality reached an agreement on Wednesday evening, but the strikers refused to accept it. The strike, which is not within the framework of Croatian law, began spontaneously after the cleaning service dismissed three rubbish collectors who had not separated waste properly.
The service has since withdrawn the dismissals. However, resentment over poor working conditions and low wages prompted the workers to continue their action. (dpa)
