Sudanese military warns against violence

Khartoum [Sudan], April 14: On Thursday, the Sudanese army warned against mobilising paramilitary groups in the north and the capital Khartoum. Deployment of the Rapid Support Forces, which are not controlled by the military, could result in the collapse of security, SUNA state news agency reported, citing Sudanese military statement.
The exchange comes amid plans to integrate the RSF into the military. Observers see the mobilisation as a threatening gesture by RSF leader Mohammed HamdanDaglo against ruler and commander-in-chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. Some fear that any clashes could lead to a civil war. Incorporating the notorious RSF into the military is one of the most important conditions for forming a civilian government in Sudan. The military and the RSF led a military coup together in the autumn of 2021, but since then, friction between the two has increased in recent months. At the same time, the dispute is delaying the transition to a civilian government that al-Burhan had promised.
Recently, Daglo spoke out in favour of a speedy transition to a civilian government, opposing al-Burhan. The military, led by al-Burhan, has held power in the country since the overthrow Omar al-Bashir in April 2019. Originally, al-Burhan was to withdraw from the transitional government by 2021 at the latest and allow for a civilian government. However, after a military coup, the forces remained in power, postponing democratic elections indefinitely. Earlier this week, the military postponed the appointment of a new PM and again delayed the transfer to a civilian government.
