The US House of Representatives continues to be paralyzed after the third candidate withdrew

Oct 25, 2023

Washington [US], October 25: The Republican Party currently has five remaining candidates running for Speaker of the US House of Representatives, all of whom support former President Donald Trump's unproven hypothesis of election fraud.
The Washington Post reported on October 25 that the Republican Party had just selected a candidate to nominate the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mr. Tom Emmer , but this candidate decided to withdraw because the number of votes was not high enough to ensure He will be elected at a vote of the entire House of Representatives.
Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy was dismissed on October 3. Since then, the US House of Representatives has been in a state of paralysis, unable to pass many important decisions such as budget plans, including military aid to Ukraine and Israel.
Before Mr. Emmer was nominated and withdrew, two similar cases happened to Republican leader in the House of Representatives Steve Calise and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jim Jordan. Mr. Emmer is Mr. Calise's deputy.
During the voting session on the nomination, Mr. Emmer received 117 votes in support, and congressman Mike Johnson received 97 votes in support.
The Republican Party believes that Democratic lawmakers will all vote against it. Therefore, the number of supporters in the internal party voting session is expected to also be the number of supporters in the plenary voting session.
At the plenary voting session, the candidate will need at least 217 votes in support. All three candidates were nominated by the Republican Party but did not receive convincing votes.
According to CNN, there are currently 5 Republican senators running, all of whom support former President Donald Trump's stance when opposing the results of the 2020 US Presidential election. These candidates include MPs Byron. Donalds (Florida), Chuck Fleischmann (Tennessee), Mark Green (Tennessee), Kevin Hern (Oklahoma), Mike Johnson (Louisiana) and Roger Williams (Texas).
Mr. Emmer is said to have not attracted convincing support within the party because he supports the 2020 election results.
Meanwhile, White House spokesman Andrew Bates issued a statement criticizing the Republican Party for not being able to elect a speaker of the House of Representatives, putting the government at risk of shutting down on November 17 if Congress does not approve the budget spending bill. .
Mr. Bates said that Republican lawmakers chose to fight internally instead of considering President Joe Biden's proposal to spend an additional $105 billion, including aid to Israel, Ukraine, border security and Taiwan support.
After Mr. Emmer withdrew, sources said that allies of Mr. McCarthy and Jordan were discussing the possibility of nominating Mr. McCarthy to return as speaker of the House of Representatives and Mr. Jordan as his deputy.
