Argentine President Milei attacked with stones at campaign rally

Aug 29, 2025

Buenos Aires [Argentina], August 29: Argentine President Javier Milei was left unharmed after stones were thrown at him during a campaign rally near Buenos Aires on Wednesday, his spokesman said.
Milei was evacuated safely from the event in Lomas de Zamora, a poor suburb of the capital, spokesman Manuel Adorni said on X. Local media reported clashes between supporters and opponents of the libertarian leader, with police briefly detaining two people.
Several government officials blamed the attack on followers of "kirchnerism," referring to the political camp of former president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.
Milei later posted a photo on X of himself smiling with his sister and secretary general of the presidency, Karina Milei, and lawmaker Jose Luis Espert. The incident comes as Milei campaigns for his party, La Libertad Avanza, ahead of the September 7 local election in the province of Buenos Aires. Confrontations also broke out Monday at another rally in Junín before Milei could speak.
Milei has polarized Argentina with deep austerity measures aimed at slashing debt and curbing inflation. While inflation has eased and the budget has balanced, many have lost jobs, and subsidies for energy and public transport have been cut. His administration is also reeling from a corruption scandal involving a pharmaceutical company.
