Climate protesters arrested blocking The Hague road

Sep 11, 2023

The Hague [Netherlands], September 11: For the second day in a row, climate activists in the Netherlands have blocked a motorway near the parliamentary and government district in The Hague on Sunday despite a ban.
Police said participants were arrested again. It was the ninth time that the A12 has been blocked by demonstrations.
Officers used water cannons against demonstrators at the rally organized by the climate action group Extinction Rebellion, broadcaster NOS reported.
The Hague's mayor, Jan van Zanen, authorized the forced evacuation of the section of the A12 motorway after protesters resisted requests to clear the road.
He also said that the demonstrations against the government's energy policy could proceed in other parts of the city where permission was granted.
On Saturday, police detained about 2,400 people at the climate demonstration during a similar disruption of traffic on the A12. They were taken by bus to a stadium in The Hague.
Almost all of them were later released. Criminal proceedings were only opened against a few.
Extinction Rebellion has said it plans to block the motorway every day until the government cuts all of the subsidies for fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
The group accuses the government of reneging on a promise to cut tax breaks and other forms of subsidy for aviation, shipping, fossil fuel power generation and oil production.
