Ecuador presidential elections heading for run-off on October 15

Aug 22, 2023

Quito [Ecuador], August 22: With over 90 percent of the ballots counted in Ecuador's presidential election, voters appear to have put Luisa Gonzalez, from the leftist camp of former president Rafael Correa, in a strong position to become the country's next leader.
The vote on Sunday was held in what some observers called a "climate of fear" following the assassination of candidate Fernando Villavicencio. Gonzalez was in the lead with over 33 percent of the vote. She was closely followed by banana entrepreneur Daniel Noboa with nearly 24 percent. If no candidate wins an absolute majority or at least 40 percent of the vote and a 10-percentage-point lead over the runner-up, a run-off will take place on October 15
