Fire on Spanish island of Tenerife flares up, 2,600 people evacuated

Oct 06, 2023

Madrid [Spain], October 6: Authorities on the Spanish holiday island of Tenerife took around 2,600 people to safety as a precautionary measure on Thursday as wildfires again threatened the largest of the Canary Islands.
The regional emergency services declared fire alarm level two, meaning there was a moderate danger. Worst hit was the La Corujera municipality in the north, where around 2,400 residents out of a total of 2,500 had to leave their homes.
Around 150 firefighters were deployed, along with fire trucks and helicopters, with their work hampered by temperatures just under 40 degrees Celsius, strong winds and low humidity.
Official reports attributed the flare-up to a "reactivation" of the devastating wildfire that destroyed around 15,000 hectares of nature in the north and north-east of the island in August.
