Kiev [Ukraine], October 16: Five Ukrainian soldiers were shot dead behind the front lines near Kharkiv by an unknown gunman, Ukrainian authorities said on Wednesday.
The General Prosecutor's Office of Ukraine said a manhunt was under way for the perpetrator, with investigators pursuing several lines of inquiry.
In particular, investigators were examining whether the shooter could have belonged to a Russian army reconnaissance and sabotage unit, the prosecutor's office said.
The attack took place on Tuesday in a residential building in the Kharkiv district in the east of the country, it said. The gunman opened fire on the soldiers, who died of their wounds.
No information was given on other possible motives for the attack.
Ukraine has been repelling a large-scale Russian invasion for more than four and a half years.
