Mar 23, 2026

Berlin [Germany], March 23: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has held a phone call with US President Donald Trump to discuss the war in Iran.
"This afternoon, I discussed the situation in Iran, Israel and Ukraine with US President Donald Trump," Merz wrote on X on Sunday. "We agreed to remain in close contact," he added. "Our discussions will continue shortly." Germany has refused to take part in military operations against Iran despite heavy pressure from Washington. Trump has in recent days called on NATO partners to help secure the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for oil shipments, but European powers including Germany have rejected the demands. (DPA)
