Indonesia warns of extreme weather during Eid exodus

Mar 28, 2024

Jakarta [Indonesia], March 28: Indonesian Agency for Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics has warned of extreme weather risks during the upcoming exodus period of the Eid holiday, which will fall from April 8 to 12.
Millions of people are estimated to travel for the exodus tradition, locally known as mudik.
"We call on all travelers, transportation service providers and transportation operators to be aware of potential extreme weather during the exodus. The dynamics of Indonesia's atmosphere are extremely volatile, which may result in sudden changes in weather patterns," the agency's chief Dwikorita Karnawati said.
The Ministry of Transportation earlier estimated that more than 70 percent of Indonesians would participate in this year's mudik, meaning that more than 190 million travelers could face extreme weather as they travel to and from their hometowns.
"If the weather is poor, do not force yourselves and delay the travel instead, especially for those who travel by sea," Dwikorita said.
Indonesia is frequently battered by powerful typhoons, triggering flash floods and landslides, and rocked by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
