Aug 08, 2024

Dhaka [Bangladesh], August 8: The interim Bangladeshi government, to be headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, is likely to be sworn in on Thursday night, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said at a media briefing aired live on Wednesday in the capital Dhaka.
Bangladeshi President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Tuesday decided to appoint Yunus as the head of the caretaker administration, to oversee the next election after long-time prime minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on Monday in the face of mass protests.
The Nobel laureate economist and entrepreneur, who championed the concepts of microcredit and microfinance, is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon from Dubai, a press release from the Yunus Centre said. General Waker-Uz-Zaman said the oath-taking ceremony will be held at 8 pm (1400 GMT). The size of the interim caretaker administration is likely to be 15, he said.
Tens of thousands of activists from the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) rallied in the capital Dhaka on Wednesday, with its leader urging everyone to keep patient after the ouster of Hasina's government.
"No destruction, no revenge, no vengeance; Let's build a society based on love, peace, and knowledge," former prime minister and head of the BNP Khaleda Zia said in a video played for the crowd in front her party headquarters in central Nayapaltan.
