Iran names top adviser Larijani as new Security Council head

Tehran [Iran], August 6: Ali Larijani, the conservative adviser to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been appointed secretary general of the country's powerful Security Council, Tehran announced
on Tuesday.
The 67-year-old succeeds the former commander of the influential Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, who is to take on a newly created position in the government, according to the state news agency Tasnim.
The Security Council deals with issues relating to national security, defence and the protection of the Islamic Revolution, and has frequently discussed the country's nuclear programme in the past.
