Israel attacks humanitarian area in Gaza, at least 40 people killed

Sep 10, 2024

Tel Aviv [Israel], September 10: Dozens killed in attack on humanitarian site in Khan Younis, amid death and destruction in Gaza.
AFP news agency quoted a Gaza civil defense official as saying on September 10 that at least 40 people were killed and 60 injured in the attack at the Al-Mawasi humanitarian area in Khan Younis city.
At least 20 tents were hit in the attack on a humanitarian area west of the southern Gaza Strip's largest city. Residents and medical workers in Al Mawasi said the area was hit by at least four rockets, with craters up to 9 meters deep.
The Israeli military said in a statement that military aircraft had "hit important Hamas terrorists operating at a command and control center located inside the humanitarian zone in Khan Younis".
The statement said the "terrorists were "conducting terrorist plots against the Israeli military and civilians". The Israeli military said it had taken "pre-strike steps to minimize the risk of civilian casualties", including the use of precision munitions and intelligence, according to The Times of Israel.
In a related development, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the organization had offered to monitor any ceasefire in Gaza and demanded an end to "the worst death and destruction" he had seen in his more than seven-year tenure.
"Of course, we will be ready to do whatever the international community asks. The question is whether the parties will accept it or not, and especially whether Israel will accept it or not," CNA quoted him as saying.
According to Reuters, at least 40,878 Palestinians were killed and 94,454 injured in Israel's military campaign in Gaza in retaliation for Hamas' attack on October 7, 2023, which killed 1,200 people and took 250 hostages.
