Lebanese speaker urges UNIFIL mission extension

Oct 19, 2026

Beirut [Lebanon], October 19: Lebanon's Parliament Speaker has urged the continued presence of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, UNIFIL, in a meeting with the French foreign minister, according to Iran's state-run news agency IRNA.
According to IRNA, Nabih Berri told Jean-Noel Barrot that Israel continues to violate UN Security Council
Resolution 1701, which aimed to resolve the conflict between Israel and Lebanon in 2006.
Lebanon's Defence Minister Michel Mansi was reported as saying the extension of UNIFIL's mandate, which ends in December, is the best option to prevent a vacuum in Lebanon before implementation of Resolution 1701 is complete.
