Minister rules out early British election amid government reshuffle

Sep 07, 2025

London [UK], September 7: A senior British minister on Saturday denied the government is in crisis after Angela Rayner's resignation over her tax affairs triggered a major Cabinet reshuffle.
Darren Jones, the chief secretary to Prime Minister Keir Starmer, said the "strongest team" is now in place after the former deputy prime minister quit for breaching the ministerial code. Jones ruled out the prospect of an early election amid opposition claims that the upheaval could open up splits within the Labour Party and collapse the prime minister's authority.
A wider junior ministerial reshuffle is understood to be taking place on Saturday as Starmer seeks to draw a line under the fallout from Rayner's departure.
