Mongolian PM Gombojavyn Zandanshatar resigns after tensions within ruling party

Mar 29, 2026

Beijing [China], March 29: Mongolian Prime Minister Gombojavyn Zandanshatar has submitted his resignation after internal party power struggles and pressure from parliament.
The official news agency Montsame reported late on Friday that 74% of members of parliament in the State Great Khural voted in favour of the motion. The resignation could further destabilize the resource-rich country, which is heavily dependent on mining.
Concerns among investors about Mongolia, which is enclosed by China and Russia and has also repeatedly struggled with corruption scandals, could increase. Last year, a power struggle within the ruling Mongolian People's Party led to a government crisis and almost to Zandanshatar's removal after only four months in office. However, the Constitutional Court overturned the vote at the time.
