More details revealed about Trump's accusation of overturning the election

Oct 03, 2024

Washington [US], October 3: According to The Guardian , the 165-page dossier was submitted by special prosecutor Jack Smith's team and released on October 2. This could be the prosecutor's last attempt to detail the case against Mr. Trump before the November 5 election, as the former US president will not attend any court hearings before the vote.
Prosecutors have offered details including allegations that a White House staffer heard Donald Trump tell family members that it didn't matter whether he won or lost the election and that he "had to fight like hell."
The new filing cites previously unknown statements provided by close advisers to Mr Trump, alleging he "used deception to target every stage of the election process ".
The filing details that when Trump's subordinate, former Vice President Mike Pence , was in danger after the mob stormed Capitol Hill on January 6, 2021, Trump told his assistant, "So what?" In addition, during a private lunch between Pence and Trump, the subordinate urged Trump to accept the results of the 2020 election and wait to run for re-election in 2024. "I don't know, 2024 is so far away," the filing quotes Trump as saying.
The former US president is said to have ignored Mr. Pence and state officials, including those in the Republican Party who publicly said Mr. Trump lost and that allegations of election fraud were false.
"When the defendant (Trump) lost the 2020 presidential election, he used unlawful conduct to try to hold on to office," prosecutor Jack Smith's team said.
The group that filed the case argued that with these allegations, Mr. Trump should not enjoy immunity from prosecution - something that has been approved by the US Supreme Court, granting broad immunity to former presidents.
Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Mr Trump's campaign, called the prosecutors' case "full of lies" and "unconstitutional". He accused prosecutor Jack Smith and the Democrats of "weaponizing the justice system".
Writing on the social network Truth Social on October 2, Mr. Trump affirmed: "I did not cheat in the 2020 election, they did", and criticized the US Department of Justice for not fulfilling its responsibilities and allowing election interference to occur.
