More explosions at Germany's Port of Hamburg after major fire extinguished

Aug 28, 2025

Berlin [Germany], August 28: Fresh explosions were reported at the Port of Hamburg overnight after a huge fire that raged for more than 40 hours was extinguished.
The explosions were recorded at around 4am (0200 GMT). No one was injured, but two containers went up in flames and had to be extinguished from a safe distance using water cannons, a spokesman for the Hamburg Fire Brigade said on Wednesday.
To prevent the fire from spreading, emergency services set up water curtains between the containers. Around 30 firefighters were still on duty on Wednesday morning uncovering embers and opening containers to extinguish them.
Only then can investigations into the cause of the fire begin, authorities said, with recovery work expected to take all of Wednesday.
The large fire in the northern German city, one of Europe's busiest ports, was initially brought under control on Tuesday morning. Six people were injured by the blaze, which broke out on Monday afternoon in the Veddel district, south-east of the city centre.
