More than 300 deaths reported in Austria's mountains in 2024

Vienna [Austria], April 11: A total of 309 people lost their lives in the Austrian Alps last year while taking part in sport and leisure activities including hiking, climbing, skiing and mountain biking.
The largest number - 178 - came from Austria, while the next largest group was 85 fatalities from neighbouring Germany.
The figures are revealed in the annual report of the Austrian Board for Alpine Safety (ÖKAS), which was published on Thursday. The total is a significant increase on 2023, when 271 people died.
ÖKAS reports that the most common cause of death was cardiovascular failure. ÖKAS President Peter Paal said that older people should have a health check before a sports holiday in the mountains. (DPA)
