Sep 13, 2025

Kathmandu [Nepal], September 13: Nepal's President has signed a resolution to dissolve parliament following a proposal from new interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki.
According to The Times of India on September 13, Nepalese President Ramchandra Paudel signed a decision to dissolve parliament at the proposal of new Prime Minister Sushila Karki - who is also the country's first female prime minister.
According to an announcement from the Office of the President of Nepal, the decision will take effect from 11 p.m. on September 12 and a new parliamentary election will be scheduled for March next year.
Sushila Karki, 73, former Chief Justice of Nepal's Supreme Court, will lead the caretaker government after days of political unrest. Former Nepali Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned after anti-government protests spread across the country. More than 50 people have been killed in clashes.
During the inauguration ceremony at the presidential palace, Ms. Karki took an oath under Article 80 of the Nepalese Constitution, pledging to perform the duties of prime minister. President Paudel congratulated her and expressed hope that she would be successful in running the country.
Ms Karki is expected to name ministers to her cabinet in the next few days. She is also the person supported by protest groups to lead the interim government. Young protesters have also gathered outside the presidential palace to celebrate Ms Karki's inauguration, according to the BBC.
Karki's appointment came after President Paudel held consultations with military leaders, political parties, legal experts and civil society leaders, as well as young protesters.
The immediate challenge for Ms Karki's government is to restore order in the country after political turmoil, and to lead the interim government until new elections are held.
