New developments on the Korean peninsula

May 31, 2024

Seoul [South Korea], May 31: South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) yesterday informed that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea launched about 10 ballistic missiles that morning, according to Yonhap.
JCS determined that the missile flew about 350 km before falling into the sea between the Korean peninsula and Japan. The South Korean military has increased surveillance and vigilance, and shared information related to North Korean missiles with the US and Japan. All three countries condemned North Korea's move.
As of last night, there was no information about the reaction or official statement from Pyongyang. Previously, KCNA on May 29 quoted North Korean leader Kim Jong-un as declaring that the country's satellite launch on May 27 failed, but Pyongyang will not be discouraged or afraid. Mr. Kim also warned South Korea of "playing with fire" by showing off its strength and conducting military exercises. A few hours after North Korea's satellite launch , South Korea deployed fighter jets to conduct attack exercises.
Amid the tense situation, congressman Roger Wicker of the US Senate Armed Services Committee yesterday proposed the idea of redeploying US tactical nuclear weapons to South Korea to enhance deterrence, according to Yonhap.
