New York investigates death from sleeping in trash bin

May 30, 2025

New York [US], May 30: Today (May 30), authorities in Long Island (New York state, USA) opened an investigation after one person was pulled from a garbage truck alive and the other died.
ABC News quoted information from Suffolk County police saying the incident was discovered when a garbage truck stopped in front of a middle school on Long Island, New York state on May 29.
According to initial information, two men were in a dumpster in front of a shopping center in Commack when the dumpster was dumped into a car early that morning.
It was only when the garbage truck stopped outside William Rogers Secondary School on Old Dock Road in Kings Park, about 10km from the centre, that the cleaners discovered someone inside the truck. It was around 6:30am.
One person was taken to hospital alive with a leg injury. Another was pronounced dead at the scene.
Video from the scene shows a large emergency response team on scene.
Police said the medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death, but they do not believe the man died before being dumped into the garbage truck.
While the identities of the victims have not been released, it is likely that the two men were sleeping inside the dumpster at the time the garbage truck arrived.
The school sent a letter to parents reassuring them that the presence of emergency services in front of the school was "completely unrelated" to the school, and that there was no threat to students or staff. Classes continued as normal.
