North Korea fired ballistic missiles towards East Sea: Seoul

Jan 05, 2026

Seoul [South Korea], January 5: North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles towards the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan, on Sunday, South Korean news agency Yonhap reported, citing Seoul's military.
Yonhap cited the general staff in Seoul (JCS) as saying that it had detected the launches. "Our military maintains a firm readiness posture while closely sharing North Korean ballistic missile information with the US and Japan sides amid a heightened surveillance posture against additional launches," the JCS said.
The missiles flew some 900 kilometres before landing in the sea, the JCS said. Japanese news agency Kyodo, citing the Japan Coast Guard, said two suspected ballistic missiles had been fired.
Yonhap said Pyongyang last launched a ballistic missile toward the East Sea in November. North Korea is prohibited by UN resolutions from launching or even testing ballistic missiles of any range. These are usually surface-to-surface missiles that can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead.
