Paris residents vote in favour of car-free zones across 500 streets

Mar 25, 2025

Paris [France], March 25: Paris residents on Sunday voted in favour of the creation of a car-free zone across huge swathes of the French capital.
A clear majority of those who voted backed the plan, meaning 500 streets throughout the city are set to be made green and turned into pedestrian zones.
As a result, up to 10,000 parking spaces could be eliminated in the coming years and drivers will need to brace for detours. Just 4% of the almost 1.4 million registered voters took part in the referendum. According to Mayor Anne Hidalgo, 66% voted in favour of the measures.
City authorities said that "in the coming weeks" consultations would begin to determine which streets will be affected by the pedestrianization initiative. There are likely to be around 25 streets per arrondissement, or administrative district, according to the plan. (DPA)
