Poland shuts border crossing with Belarus after verdict on journalist

Feb 10, 2023

Warsaw [Poland], February 10: Following the sentencing of a Polish journalist in Belarus, Poland has shut its Bobrowniki border crossing with the neighbouring country for security reasons until further notice, Polish Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski said on Thursday.
Another list of people to be sanctioned who are involved in the repression of the Polish minority in Belarus will be drawn up, Kaminski said.
On Wednesday, a court in Grodno sentenced 49-year-old journalist Andrzej Poczobut to eight years in a prison camp.
Poczobut reported for Polish media on the Belarusian political crisis sparked by the August 2020 presidential election, which was widely believed to be rigged.
At the time, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko had himself declared the winner again after 26 years in office, although the country's democratic movement saw Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as the true victor. (dpa)
