Polish police discover 1 tonne heroin, 3 held

Jun 09, 2026

Berlin [Germany], June 9: Polish police say they have dealt one of their biggest blows against international drug smugglers. More than a tonne of heroin with an estimated market value of 220 million zloty ($60 million) was seized in the Baltic port city of Gdynia near Gdaesk, the PAP news agency reported on Monday.
"This is the largest operation of its kind in more than 10 years," Interior Minister Marcin Kierwi?ski told journalists. Polish investigators received a tip-off from British colleagues in March that a consignment of drugs was expected from the United Arab Emirates, according to the report.
The drugs were discovered disguised as decorative bricks in shipping containers. Criminal proceedings have been initiated against two men and one woman from Poland in connection with the smuggling. (dpa)
