Doha [Qatar], October 2: Team Qatar wrestler Shaheen Mohammed claimed the bronze medal in the 77kg category at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games on Thursday.
Shaheen produced a series of strong performances on his way to bronze, opening his campaign with an 8-0 victory over Tajikistan's Alisher Rozimadov in the Round of 16 before defeating India's Aman 9-0 in the quarter-finals.
In the semi-final, Shaheen lost 9-0 to Iran's Ali Reza, setting up a bronze-medal bout against Indonesia's Andika Sulaiman, which the Qatari wrestler won 8-0.
The achievement caps a strong year for Shaheen, who also won gold at the 2026 Asian Wrestling Championships in Kyrgyzstan.
His latest continental success reflects his continued progress and ability to compete at the highest level in Asia, while adding another medal to Team Qatar's tally at the Asian Games.
Shaheen's bronze took Qatar's medal tally at the 20th Asian Games to 14 medals - three gold, six silver and five bronze - as Team Qatar athletes continued to reach the podium across different sports.
President of the Qatar Boxing and Wrestling Federation, Sheikh Fahad bin Khalid Al Thani, described Shaheen's achievement as an important step for Qatar wrestling.
"We are delighted with our champion's bronze medal, and we dedicate this achievement to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar, and H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee," he said.
"The competition was very strong, and thankfully we were successful at these Games. Our champion delivered an excellent performance and secured the bronze medal.
"This is an excellent step for Qatar wrestling, and we look forward to an even better future. Our ambition is always to finish first, and Qatar deserves to be in first place.
"We worked towards winning gold, but sport has its circumstances, and we are very proud of our champion and the level he displayed.
"We are looking forward to winning the gold medal at the next Asian Games, Doha 2030. We will continue working and developing towards that goal, raising the Qatar flag and achieving further success at upcoming events and championships."
Beach v'ball stars Younousse & Cherif in final
Meanwhile, team Qatar's beach volleyball pair Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan continued their impressive run as they set up the final against Indonesia after defeating Thailand 2-0 in the semi-final.
The Qatari duo won 23-21, 21-12 to move one step closer to retaining the gold medal they claimed at Hangzhou 2022 and underline their strong presence on the Asian stage.
The opening set was closely contested, with the lead changing hands throughout.
As the set approached its decisive stages, Cherif and Tijan drew on their experience and maintained their focus to take it 23-21.
Team Qatar carried that momentum into the second set and continued to put pressure on their Thai opponents, eventually taking the set 21-12 to seal their place in the final.
With the victory, Cherif and Tijan remain on course to defend their Asian Games title and are now just one win away from gold.
Team Qatar will have another opportunity to add to their record of success when they face Indonesia in the final, aiming to complete their campaign with gold and retain Qatar's Asian Games beach volleyball title.
Mohammed Salem Al Kuwari, General Supervisor of the Qatar Beach Volleyball Team, expressed his delight at Team Qatar's qualification for the final, saying the pair remain firmly on course towards their goal of retaining the gold medal they won at the previous edition.
"Thankfully, we have secured a well-deserved place in the final after a strong and difficult match against Thailand, who produced an excellent performance and made it a highly competitive contest," Al Kuwari said.
"But Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan showed great character and managed to win the match and qualify for the final.
"We now have one final step. We will face Indonesia in the final, which will certainly be a different and difficult match, and we are preparing for it carefully.
"We have great confidence in Cherif and Tijan. We know the final will require a high level of concentration and discipline throughout the match, and we will give everything we have to bring the gold medal back to Qatar."
Qatar's padel pair in semis
Team Qatar's padel pair of Rashid Nawaf and Mashari Nawaf advanced to the semi-finals.
The Qatari duo defeated the UAE in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, to secure their place in the last four, where they will face Iran's Hami Golestan and Arya Roghani today. The Iranian pair reached the semi-finals after defeating Japan 2-0 in the quarter-finals.
Team Qatar produced an impressive performance against the UAE, displaying their technical quality to secure their second consecutive victory.
The Qatari pair had booked their quarter-final place by defeating Kuwait's Abdulaziz Redha and Fouad Behbehani in straight sets in the Round of 16, and have progressed through the tournament without dropping a set.
Reaching the semi-finals represents an important milestone for Team Qatar at Aichi-Nagoya.
Seeded first in the padel competition, the Qatari pair will be looking to continue their winning run and reach the final as they pursue a historic medal in padel's first appearance at the Asian Games.
Volleyball team's campaign ends
Team Qatar's volleyball campaign at the Asian Games came to an end in the quarter-finals following a 3-0 defeat to Japan.
Japan won the match 25-14, 25-13, 25-12, controlling most stages of the contest and capitalizing on their strength and quality across different aspects of the game.
