Russia reports Ukrainian drone attacks on border regions

Jan 17, 2024

Moscow [Russia], January 17: Russia again repelled Ukrainian drone attacks over the border region in the south-west of the country, the Ministry of Defence in Moscow said on Tuesday. A total of eight missiles were repelled over the Voronezh region and four in the Belgorod region, the ministry announced on Telegram.
In Voronezh, a child was slightly injured after fragments of a downed drone crashed into a flat, the governor of the region, Alexander Gusev, wrote on Telegram. Several apartment blocks and private houses were damaged, according to Gusev. Emergency services were on site. It was not possible to independently verify whether all drones were actually repelled by the Russian military.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a full-scale Russian military invasion for almost two years. Kiev has launched repeated attacks on Russian territory, however the damage is miniscule compared with the destruction and civilian casualties which Russian bombardments have rained down on Ukraine.
Concerned about faltering support from allies to help fend off the Russian forces, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was attending the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Swiss ski resort of Davos in person on Tuesday. Zelensky faces increasing war fatigue in European Union capitals and a United States distracted by a presidential election campaign.
On the ground, neither Russia nor Ukraine has made any significant progress on the front in the past week, the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) said in its daily update on the war. Despite the capture of the small town of Maryinka in December, Russia has not managed to capitalize on this and advance either west towards Kurakhove or south towards Novomykhalivka, the MoD announced on Tuesday.
