Dec 07, 2024

Seoul [South Korea], December 7: On the morning of December 7, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol publicly apologized to the nation for declaring martial law and said he would let the ruling party decide his term.
The press conference on the morning of December 7 was the first time South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared publicly since declaring martial law on the evening of December 3, according to Yonhap.\
In his speech, the leader apologized for causing anxiety and inconvenience to the people by declaring martial law. He explained that he declared the situation out of desperation as president.
President Yoon pledged that there would be no second martial law as recently speculated. Mr. Yoon declared that he would not shirk related legal responsibilities.
The leader entrusted his ruling People Power Party (PPP) to find a way to stabilize the political situation, "including during my term".
Shortly afterwards, PPP leader Han Dong-hoon said that Mr. Yoon had failed to fulfill his duties as president and stressed that President Yoon's early resignation was inevitable. Mr. Yoon was elected president in May 2022 and his term will end in 2027.
South Korean opposition parties have submitted a resolution to impeach the president to the National Assembly and the vote is scheduled to take place at 7 p.m. today (5 p.m. Vietnam time).
