Trump withdrew the National Guard from several major cities, declaring 'they will return'

Washington [US], January 1: Following the US Supreme Court ruling, President Trump decided to withdraw the National Guard from several major cities, although he stated they would return if crime increased.
NBC News reported on January 1st that US President Donald Trump said he is withdrawing National Guard forces from the cities of Chicago (Illinois), Los Angeles (California), and Portland (Oregon) following a major setback at the Supreme Court.
"We will be back, perhaps in a much different and stronger form, when crime starts to rise again. It's just a matter of time!", Trump wrote on the social media platform Truth Social.
Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected an emergency request from the administration that the military was necessary to protect federal agents working in Chicago to enforce immigration policies.
In an unsigned ruling, the court rejected the administration's claim that the situation in Illinois met the criteria for the president to invoke a federal law allowing him to deploy the National Guard for federal service.
"At this preliminary stage, the government has failed to determine the source of authority that allows the military to enforce the law in Illinois," the court ruled.
This decision only concerns Chicago, but it is likely to exacerbate other challenges to the deployment of the National Guard.
"We won the lawsuit and forced him to do so," said a spokesperson for California Governor Gavin Newsom, a Democrat.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, also a Democrat, wrote on the social media platform X that Trump "lies." "He lost the lawsuit when the state of Illinois opposed the National Guard's efforts to militarize American cities. Now Trump is forced to back down," Pritzker said.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said her office has not yet received official notification.
"They were never legally deployed to Portland and their presence was unnecessary. If President Trump ultimately chooses to comply with the court order and disband our troops, that would be a major victory for the people of Oregon and for the rule of law," she stated.
Initially, Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles in June 2025 following clashes between protesters against immigration crackdowns and law enforcement. By October 2025, 500 National Guard troops had arrived in the Chicago area. That same month, the administration deployed 200 troops to Portland.
