Turkish opposition leader asks Germany to clear Eurofighter delivery

Apr 23, 2025

Istanbul [Turkey], April 23: Imprisoned Turkish opposition leader Ekrem Imamoglu has appealed to the future German government not to block the delivery of Eurofighter jets to Turkey.
A post published on Imamoglu's account on the X platform on Monday evening said that the aircraft are "urgently needed and long awaited by [Turkey's] air force." The jailed politician, from the social democratic Republican People's Party (CHP), asked that the decision be made regardless of who is currently governing Turkey.
"Turkey is not just Erdogan. Turkey is bigger than Erdogan," he emphasized, referring to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Governments come and go. Turkey's national interests are more valuable than Erdogan or Imamoglu." Imamoglu is considered a likely challenger to Erdogan. He was initially detained on March 19, then later arrested and removed from office as mayor of Istanbul. The move has been widely criticized as politically motivated.
