May 18, 2023

Geneva [Switzerland], May 18: The United Nations have called for more international aid for Sudan and the surrounding region because of the ongoing conflict in the country. On Wednesday the UN emergency relief agency OCHA and the refugee agency UNHCR requested more than $3.2 billion in relief funds to finance their work in the conflict area until October. About half of the 49 million people in Sudan are dependent on humanitarian aid, the agencies said in Geneva. The money will be used to provide food, water, shelter, sanitation and medical assistance to some 18 million people.Nearly one million people have been displaced since mid-April, including to neighbouring countries. OCHA expert Ramesh Rajasingham said the crisis in Sudan is rapidly evolving into a regional crisis. UNHCR expects more than one million people to leave Sudan in the next six months. The OCHA initially estimated the need for $1.7 billion in donations for aid relief for 2023.
