Riga [Latvia], January 10: A protest against U.S. actions in Venezuela took place on Friday in front of Riga Castle, with demonstrators carrying flags of Venezuela, Latvia, the European Union, and Ukraine.
Participants chanted slogans such as "Hands off Venezuela!", "President, get a grip, remember your role!", and "The U.S. is colonizing, Europe is ignoring!" Protesters also held posters reading "Where is international law?", and "Who will be next? Colombia? Greenland?"
Law enforcement officers were present at the site to monitor the event.
The protest was organized by the community center Maiznica and supported by the youth organizations Protest and Young European Federalists. In a statement, the organizers said the demonstration aimed to condemn what they described as "U.S. imperialist aggression against Venezuela" and to call on the Latvian government to apply international law equally to all countries.
The move came days after the Trump administration launched a large-scale military strike in Venezuela on Jan. 3, taking by force the oil-rich South American country's President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, before putting them in custody in New York, drawing worldwide condemnation and concern.
