Syrians mark chemical attack for first time since fall of Assad

Aug 22, 2025

Damascus [Syria], August 22: Survivors of a 2013 chemical attack near the Syrian capital Damascus on Thursday commemorated the anniversary of the harrowing event, more than eight months after the overthrow of long-time ruler Bashar Al Assad.
Hundreds of people were killed in a sarin attack in the rebel-held town of Eastern Ghouta on August 21, 2013. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor, has put the toll at over 1,400 deaths, saying it was the deadliest chemical attack during Syria's civil war, which lasted more than a decade.
Commemorating the Ghouta attack anniversary, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al Shaibani wrote on X that those responsible of the former regime must be held accountable so that "peace can flourish over the graves" of the victims. (DPA)
